Barefoot Landing

MYRTLE BEACH, SC

One of America’s
first
entertainment waterfront villages

OPERATING ENTERTAINMENT CENTER

Barefoot Landing, a specialty retail village located on and around a lagoon situated between the intracoastal waterway and the Atlantic Ocean in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina opened in 1987 as one of America’s first dining and entertainment-focused waterfront developments.

The site, located north of the major beachfront hotel district in this summer vacation town, was in a major mid-market tourist destination. Rick Hill, a [artner in the development. created a plan to build an elevated boardwalk lined with restaurants and shops over the water’s edge in a low-country craft-style. Anchored by the House of Blues, the featured a live theater by the musical group Alabama, Alligator Adventure, and 17 restaurants and cafes.

Almost 40 years later, Myrtle Beach has grown to a year-round resort destination, with 14 million annual visitors and 140 golf courses. The project commands average minimum rents in excess of $40.00 per square foot.

Lesson Learned

Clustering 17 restaurants, nighttime entertainment, and waterfront attractions created the go-to destination for a second day of activity in a 24-hour vacation day.
